Sewing Tip -- Refolding Pattern Pieces

I've decided to post sewing tips periodically, since there are some things I wish I had discovered long ago! I'm also hoping that some of you will add your own tips... To start off, here's a tip about getting tissue paper pattern piece back into the package (now that's some alliteration!). I'm sure I'm not the only one who has tried stuffing pieces back into the envelope, often trying to refold them on the original lines to make them lie flat. Well, stuff no more!

If you iron your pattern pieces (without steam, of course!), they will become unbelievably smooth. You can fold them to any size you want, and the heat makes beautiful creases. I would actually recommend ironing your pieces before you even use them, as they will be much easier to arrange on your fabric! As a note, don't try ironing Sense and Sensibility patterns -- the ink is heat sensitive, and will transfer onto your ironing board or iron!

  1. I really appriciate this tip. My Grandma showed me how to do this, and it is such an easy matter to put patterns away!

I look foward to reading more of your tips.
Have a very bright, very cheerful day!

  2. Thanks for the tip, Shannon. I'd long ago given up trying to fold pattern pieces on the original lines. My current method involves folding and squishing the tissue into rectangles roughly the size of the pattern envelope. This ironing idea ought to turn out a much neater end result.

  3. Thankyou Shannon. I've only sewn one thing to date (unless you count the cushion cover I did when I was at school, aged ten - lets not go there!) so tips like this are invaluable! I think the pattern I used is stuffed back in the envelope at my parents house - oops!

  4. Great tip! I never have been good about getting pattern pieces back in:-o

Thanks too for the tip about the S&S patterns..I didn't know that and it will save me much frustration. I wonder..did you find this out the hard way or does Mrs. Chancey give us a headsup somewhere on the pattern?

By the way...I really love your new apron designs! The Chocolate Truffle is scrumptious!!! I just had to say that:-)

    Lots of love,

  5. What a great idea! I just place my patterns in quart size ziplocs- until I saw this I had *no* idea how to get them back inside the envelopes!

  6. Thanks for this tip, Shannon! I am looking forward to reading the sewing tips that you plan to post every so often.

Although I have done only a few sewing projects, each time I have found it exasperating trying to fit the pattern back in the envelope... What a fantastic solution!! :)

  7. I have ACTUALLY learned how to fold up my pattern pieces EXACTLY as they originally were and fit them back in the envelope. :0 Yes, I know I am very weird... ;)

  8. I'm so glad this tip may prove helpful! It's actually one of my favorite parts of sewing, now ;-)

Sommer, I think I read about the Sensibility patterns on the forum -- I think someone else had encountered this problem!

Amanda, I can usually get mine folded back if I try really hard -- you're not weird, just patient! ;-)

    Yours in Christ,
    Shannon
