An Unexpected Guest

Recently, as I was busy preparing dinner, I indulged in my klutzy tendencies by dropping a knife between the cabinet and the stove. Yes, I am talented!

I pulled out the bottom drawer of our stove, hoping that there might be some way to extract the knife without having to pull out the whole range. And then I saw it.

It was small.

It was furry.

It had a tail.

Whatever it was, it certainly was not alive -- it looked a bit... well, flattened! You see, in the hustle and bustle of moving in, we had failed to clean under the stove. I called for Pablo and explained the situation. He produced a shovel, I found a cardboard box for disposal of the *thing,* and we tentatively approached the stove. Neither of us could figure out why the *thing* hadn't been smelling up the house.

After a prod or two, Pablo suggested that perhaps it was a stuffed animal. And only then did I remember that we had found proof of a former dog occupant on several occasions!

We pulled it out, only to discover that this was our mysterious *thing*:

Isn't it terrifying? Honestly, it looked much more sinister in the dark shadows under the stove!

We ended up pulling out the stove and cleaning behind it, a process that produced an ancient piece of dog kibble -- and a spoon I had dropped and forgotten about. Oops. *wink*

Ah, the little adventures of life!

  1. Oh, that is too funny! I have pretty extreme klutzy tendencies, too, so I sympathize. :)

  2. LOL! Good prep for what life will be like as a Mom . . . trust me, the things you will find under the fridge and stove when you clean will be amazing at times--as well as revolting. ;-)

  3. Wow, I've never seen coloring like that in a mouse before. It is a mouse, isn't it? ;)

I don't know if you remember me, but I have commented on your blog a few times, and followed it for a long while. I remember that you had a hedgehog (hopefully I'm remembering the right blogger!). I'm really interested in getting one, but I'd like to know a little bit more. (Of course!)

Do they cost a lot to keep healthy and maintain? That's my biggest question.

They are such darling little creatures, and I would love to have one.

    Thanks!

  6. Hope Anne, I can only imagine... :-)

Miss Eyebright, it took me considerably longer than it took you to catch on to what kind of "mouse" it was :-) My sister is the one who owned the hedgehog, but I did post about her several times -- unfortunately Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle passed away this past summer, for unknown causes (her liver was enlarged, but we don't know why). That's actually one of the things about hedgehogs, is that it is hard to find medical care for them -- and they are difficult to diagnose. However, beyond the initial purchase cost (around $150-$200) and possible vet bills (they're usually quite healthy), they don't cost very much to keep. They're certainly conversation starters! It takes a while for them to bond, and they have to be socialized -- but they are so endearing and wonderfully adorable :-)

    Blessings,
    Shannon

  7. Ok, thanks! I was worried that there was common illnesses in hedgehogs that invoked large vet bills. :) I am really looking into getting and holding one for the first time!

  8. I literally laughed out loud when I saw this -- my cats have the same mouse toy and I've mistaken it for a real mouse, too!! :)

  9. ha!! glad you had a big strong husband to save the day. :O)

My daughter has *screamed* for her daddy while frozen in fear in what turned out to be a very spidery looking glob of thread.

  10. Wow! That must have been the kind of thing that was scary at first, but you could laugh so hard about it later. :)

I love your blog, btw! :D
