What's Wrong With This Picture

As I was re-sorting our stored kids' clothes, I ended up with a stack of shorts that will probably fit Laddie this summer. They are, stacked from top to bottom, size 9 mths, 12 mths, and 24 mths. All the exact same dimensions in waist and length, within a centimeter or so -- and they will all probably fit my 14-month-old.

Stacked together, you can see how similar the sizes are -- and the largest pair
is probably the 9mth khaki shorts on top!

You'd think we could come up with some industry standard sizing or something...

  1. That's funny! We're always finding kids' clothing that says it's for a certain age, and would never have fit any of my siblings at that age :)

    1. It's crazy, isn't it?! I get that kids are different sizes, so a 2T is not going to fit every two-year-old... but when every brand seems to have its own sizing, it makes it even more perplexing! :-)

  2. Ha ha, yeah it seems there is no "standard" sizing for store-bought clothing. Hey, if they fit, your son could wear 'em. They are cute shorts :)

    1. They have it right with men's pants -- why not use measurements for sizing, rather than a random "number?" Anyway, at least Laddie should have a good selection of shorts for the summer! :-)

  3. Wouldn't that be nice? And make it too easy on us ;)

    1. Ah, yes, where is my sense of adventure?! ;-) But a girl can dream, right?

  4. I know exactly what you mean, Shannon! Garrett wears anything from a 2T to a 4T, and he's almost 4. Gemma wears anything from a 12 month old size to a 4T, and she's 2. Leggings are the one item of clothing that she can wear the longest...too short and they become capri pants. I was just thinking about the inconsistency with sizing today. -Alyssa

    1. Yes, whoever popularized leggings for little girls was a genius! Rosa had a little pair of footed pajama pants, size 6-9 mths. When she outgrew them I removed the feet and hemmed them, and they fit until she was about 2! Though by that point they were rather snug, and very short... :-)

At least some children's clothing brands have caught on to the idea of adjustable elastic in the waist -- it certainly helps with the ridiculous sizing variations!

  5. Hmmm... Perhaps they are similar in size because the smaller ones are made to fit a diaper then by 24 months that bulk is not needed?

    1. That's certainly a possibility! Though if anyone actually has a boy potty-trained by 24 months, they're ahead of the game. :-)
