The Best Birthday Yet

On this, the 22nd anniversary of my natal day (doesn't that sound so official and pretentious?), all attempts to express the thanksgiving in my heart seem utterly futile!

My dear parents and sister celebrated with me this morning, and being with them always reminds me how blessed I am to have such a loving family.

There's nothing better than a birthday dinner with someone very handsome...

... and to top it all off (as if it needed topping), this is also my first birthday with someone very special:

At least I can blame my current size on that special someone, rather than on all that pizza! *wink*

In Memoriam

How grateful I am for the many thousands of men who have fought for centuries to keep our nation free! Memorial Day is so easy to gloss over. It's a day off, the start of summer, a day to barbeque with friends or family. It's so easy to forget. There are always pictures of Arlington cemetary that are sent in countless e-mail forwards at this time of year. But as I scrolled down one forward, something caught my eye -- a name. The name of one of America's heroes, etched into the simple white headstone that marks his grave. Those neat rows of white stone seem impersonal somehow. But each one has a name, each one stands for a man who served his country -- often giving his life in battle so that we might be free to barbeque to our hearts' content.

I am reminded of my own family members who served this country, such as my mother's father. He served as a postmaster during WWII, entering Europe by way of Africa. The post office set up their headquarters in Salzburg, in the very house where Mozart was born.

My grandfather died when I was only eight, and I never heard him talk about the war. But we have a picture of him in his Army gear, with his jaunty cap and boyish grin. And we have some of the few snapshots he took in Europe -- including a tragic glimpse from the concentration camp that his unit entered after the Germans had fled. I can't imagine what it must have been like to see that kind of desolation first-hand.

To me, my Grandfather was loving and extremely tolerant. Now I wish I could go back and thank him for his service, and ask him about the war. I would ask him how it was growing up in during the Great Depression, about the things he saw and the people he knew.

My other hero? My dad! I love listening to his stories about serving as a chaplain on a battleship during the First Persian Gulf War. He's one of the only people I know who managed to be in the Army (reserve), the Marines, and the Navy! I appreciate his service to our country and to the men and women who fight for it -- and I also admire his commitment to principle and his refusal to play the politics of the Chaplain Corp, even when it cost him his career.

There are so many people to be grateful to. But none of their efforts, however valiant, would have given us the freedom we have today without God's blessing. I pray this Memorial Day that as we remember our nation's fallen heroes, we will also remember the God who gave us the ultimate freedom -- freedom from the power of death.

Millenia of Faithfulness

"Blessed be Thou,
O Lord God of Israel our Father,
forever and ever.

Thine, O Lord, is
greatness and
power, and
glory and
victory, and
praise:
for all that is in heaven and in earth is thine:
thine is the kingdom, O Lord,
and Thou excellest as head over all.

Both riches and honor come of Thee,
and Thou reignest over all,
and in Thine hand is power and strength,
and to give strength unto all.

Now therefore, our God,
we thank Thee,
and praise Thy glorious Name."

~I Chronicles 29:10-13~

Our great God was faithful when David prayed these words shortly before his death. He was faithful before then, and He has been faithful since then. Even when His people rebel against Him, He is faithful to His gracious promises. As we measure time, God has been faithful for several millenia. But the truth is, His faithfulness is not bound by time; it is infinite.

Praise be to God for His unfathomable faithfulness!

Goodness

"How great is Thy goodness, which Thou hast laid up for them that fear Thee! and done to them that trust in Thee,
even before the sons of men!"
~ Psalm 31:19 ~

"Come, let us rejoice unto the Lord: let us sing aloud unto the rock of our salvation. Let us come before His face with praise: let us sing loud unto Him with Psalms. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods, In whose hand are the deep places of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his. to whom the Sea belongeth, for He made it, and His hands formed the dry land. Come let us worship and fall down, and kneel before the Lord our maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand."
~ Psalm 95:1-7 ~

The Blessings of Abundance

We talk a lot about gratitude at Thanskgiving, but somehow I always find myself at a loss for what to say. Not because I'm ungrateful -- although I do take far too many blessings for granted. On the contrary, how can I pick just a few things for which I am grateful? How can I put them into simple phrases?

How can I express gratitude for a Savior Who was willing to die so that I might live eternally with Him? Impossible.

How can I express gratitude for shelter -- not only protection from the elements, but a beautiful home that I can share with my family? Impossible.

How can I express gratitude for my family, for the love and tenderness they have always shown to me? Impossible.

How can I express gratitude for humor and laughter, two "unessential" blessings that God has graciously given to us? Impossible.

How can I express gratitude for the beauties of nature, the glorious palette of colors and textures that so often takes my breath away? Impossible.\

How can I express gratitude for human companionship, for dear friends who understand and love me? Impossible.

How can I express gratitude for the blessings of freedom and security in a deeply troubled world? Impossible.

How can I express gratitude for food, and an abundance of it, when so many others have so little? Impossible.

How can I express gratitude for being made in God's image and for bearing His likeness, however imperfectly? Impossible

.

When I say that I'm thankful for family, or friends, or any of the multitude of other blessings that I have, it seems so inadequate to just use one word. It's impossible for me to put into words how I feel without sounding glib and trite. And that's why, above all, I'm grateful for a Lord who can understand my heart when my words are insufficient. Thank you, Lord!

Saving a Bundle

While I'm not a fan of the huge Black Friday rush after Thanksgiving, I did venture out this year because of the JoAnn's sale! I spent $33 and saved $198 -- thanks to incredible sales and an extra 20% off. Not only did I find some fabulous fabric for a winter coat (which I've been wanting to make for some time!), but I also took advantage of the Butterick pattern sale and got enough scrapbook paper to give my cashier carpal tunnel! *grin*

I was expecting to have a long receipt, but I wasn't expecting it to be 46" long. I decided it was worth photographing, since it's by far the longest receipt I've ever had! I hope all of you had a blessed Thanksgiving celebration, and safe travels if you ventured out for some shopping on Friday!
